–

Portions in Portuguese:

Friend 1: E aí cara, hoje nós vamos comer um sanduíche com a galera lá na Hamburgueria do Emílio. Vamos?

Friend 2: Quem vai?

Friend 1: Vai o Samuel e sua namorada, minha esposa e eu. O que acha?

Friend 2: Não cara, você sabe que eu estou solteiro. Não sair com vocês pra ficar segurando vela. Deixa pra outro dia :(.

Friend 1: Que pena cara. Não se preocupe, você vai encontrar alguém logo.

I was reading an article a few days ago which says: “Friendship is a crucial element in protecting our mental health. We need to talk to our friends and we want to listen when our friends want to talk to us. Our friends can keep us grounded and can help us get things in perspective.”

I totally agree with this part of the article and I’m sure you already practice this activity almost every day. Well, there is an expression in Portuguese that is related to informal conversation between friends. Listen to the episode and learn how to use it.

Examples we mentioned in the episode:

ENG: He’s just the assistant to the manager, there’s no need to lick his boots.
PTBR: Ele é apenas assistente do gerente, não precisa babar o ovo dele.

ENG: She’s such a bootlicker that I don’t take any of her compliments seriously.
PTBR: Ela é tão baba ovo que eu não levo nenhum dos elogios dela a sério.

ENG: The kind of office in which people feel they have to bootlick in order to get ahead.
PTBR: O tipo de escritório no qual as pessoas sentem que tem que babar ovo para se dar bem.

The literal translation for “baba ovo” can be considered a little bit offensive, so, be careful when using it. In english, it would be: “ass kisser“.

Guilherme: Hum, então aquele cara é um 171?

André: Sim!

Guilherme: Eu acho que eu tenho um outro exemplo.

André: Hum!

Every week we will teach you guys a new Brazilian Portuguese Expression. This week the expression is “bem feito”.

Let’s say that something bad happens to someone as a result of something he / she did. In Portuguese, it is common to use expressions such as “bem feito!“, “bem feito pra você!“, “pega, abestado“, “toma, seu leso“, “acho é pouco!“, “vai, seu besta“, “ché poco!”.

Usually, we use expressions like this to show the person that he deserves what happened to him, who knows how he learns a lesson and avoids making the same mistake again.

Portions in Portuguese:

Guilherme: Bem feito! Quem mandou você não ter ouvido antes?

André: OK, beleza. É isso aí gente!

Every week we will teach you guys a new Brazilian Portuguese Expression. This week the expression is “zoar” or “zuar“.

Some people on reddit made the valid point that the correct spelling is “”zoar””. I agree with that but I also think that the form “zuar” should be learnt even in writing as my experience as a Brazilian using and seeing this expression being used tells me that people use the form “zuar” much more than zoar. I also believe that all languages are alive and are can undergo changes, accept new ways of orthography and new words. Your’s truly, André.

Portions in Portuguese:

André: Guilherme, cê gosta muito de ficar vendo cara forte né, velho? Vídeo de cara forte…

Guilherme: Hahaha! Ô cara… já vai começar?

André: Haha, cê adora ver vídeo de cara forte né?

Guilherme: Não, não… Não gosto não!

Guilherme’s example:

Essa é a situação: eu cheguei no trabalho com uma roupa estranha, e aí o André me viu e começou a me zuar.

Então eu disse: Ah, cara! Eu mal cheguei e você já vai me zuar?”
